Galicia is known in Spain as the land of a thousand rivers, and is a remote, rural region. Inland, there are green landscapes and romantic villages, while the Atlantic coastline offers the contrasts of smooth, sandy beaches, scenic coves and bays with beautiful fishing villages and dramatic, windswept cliffs. The climate is temperate, with winter temperatures of about 5 degrees C, climbing to a maximum of around 20 degrees C in summer. Rain is never too far away, especially in winter. Galicia's folklore clearly shows its Gaelic and Celtic origins, while the Romans also left their legacy. During the Middle Ages, the shrine of Santiago de Compostela was founded, and today, thousands of travellers head for the cathedral at the end of this famous pilgrimage trail. The gastronomy of the region is noted for its superb fish dishes, pies or empanadas containing meat or fish, traditional sweets, some of which have closely guarded, secret recipes, and the Ribeiro wine. Towns of note are the capital, Santiago de Compostela, A Coruna, and Vigo.
