The principality of Asturias has over 3500 years of recorded history. It is situated on the north coast and is a largely undiscovered region of "green Spain' where you will find many nature reserves and national parks, featuring high mountain ranges and a rugged coastline. Major attractions are the Way of Santiago and the Ruta de la Plata, the "silver route" which wind through this region. The mountains offer climbing, walking, caving and skiing and there are numerous clean, sandy beaches along the coast. The climate has warm, humid summers, with sunshine and rain, and generally mild winters except in the mountains where extensive snowfalls can be encountered. It has a distinctive culture based on ancient rites and beliefs, and the local crafts and gastronomy are of high quality. Varied seafood abounds at the coast, whilst the mountains boast dishes based on beans and blood sausage. There are specialist cheeses and superb cider.
