This region offers an extremely varied landscape. In its nature reserves and the mountain ranges of Picos de Europa, bears, wolves and eagles can be found, with rivers full of salmon and trout, whilst the spectacular coastline along the Bay of Biscay is a complete contrast with stunning sandy beaches, protected coves and dramatic cliffs peppered with pretty seaside towns. Between these you will find a patchwork of lush meadows, pastures and green hills. It has a reputation for a cool, rainy climate. The capital, Santander, is located on a beautiful bay and is an active resort, offering many sporting facilities as well as being an important port. It plays host to cultural gatherings including the noted international summer festival.
