This region is of particular cultural interest as the Basques are a distinct people, with a language, Euskara, completely unrelated to any other and of mysterious origins. Today, it is one of the most industrialised regions of Spain, but despite that, it has an almost untouched green, mountainous interior with natural parks where you can climb, hike, ride or play golf. Another attraction is the steep, rugged coastline. One of the main cities is San Sebastian, which offers a sophisticated and aristocratic beach resort with beautiful buildings and excellent beaches. Bilbao is an important economic centre with an attractive historic quarter, and of course is home to the renowned Guggenheim Museum. The capital is Vitoria, which has an active cultural life with several important international festivals. The Basque cuisine is generally accepted as being Spain's finest.
