Navarre can be divided into three sectors: the mountain range of the Pyrenees in the north, La Riviera in the south, a flat plain with small lagoons and the fertile valley of the Ebro river, and, in between, la Zona Media, with impressive landscapes and canyons. It has a mixture of influences from both the Basques in the Pyrenees and also the Mediterranean from the Ebro Valley. Wheat, vegetables and vines are cultivated in the valley and there are nearly 50 nature reserves throughout the region, offering facilities for hiking, climbing and fishing. By far its biggest claim to fame is the celebrated running of the bulls and the Fiesta de San Fermin in July, held in the capital city of Pamplona.
