The rugged Mediterranean coast of the Costa Brava is the major attraction of this region with its ample beaches and mild climate, however the mountainous Pyrenees to the north rising to over 3,000 metres are also to be noted. It has a marked culture of its own, distinguished by its own language, Catalan, which is widely spoken. The focal point is the cosmopolitan capital city of Barcelona, which offers outstanding architectural sights, not least the works of the architect Antoni Gaudi. Figueres, is the birthplace of Salvador Dali and is home to a museum dedicated to many of his works. Seafood, rice dishes, and traditional desserts like the famous Catalan Cream characterize Catalonia's excellent cuisine.
