This region has yet to be discovered by mass tourism and has plenty to offer those that desire to be off the beaten track. It is an important area for wildlife, and one of its reserves, the Parque Natural Monfrugue is home to over 75 percent of Spain's protected species. Bordered in the west by Portugal, the landscape features three main mountain ranges, two fertile river valleys, and a low plain area. The climate is continental, with very warm summers and quite cold winters. The Romans left their mark here, particularly in the capital, Merida, which was one of the most important cities of the Empire. Here, extensive remains can be visited. Other important cities are Caceres, with its beautiful old quarter enclosed by Moorish town walls, and Trujillo, the birthplace of the famous conqueror, Pizarro. The regional produce includes game, sausages, ham and cheeses, together with some fine wines. Ceramics, metalwork and embroideries are traditional too.
