The name La Mancha comes from an Arabic expression meaning "dry waterless land", and this is a region of extensive empty, hot treeless plains bordered by mountains. This is all part of its appeal, and it is worth following some of the tourist routes to discover the scenery made famous by Cervantes and his hero Don Quijote, including the characteristic windmills. Toledo, the former capital of Spain, is certainly one of the country's architectural treasures, with magnificent monuments from Moorish, Mudejar, Gothic and Renaissance periods. It was also the hometown of the great painter El Greco, and there is also the enchanting medieval city of Cuenca, surrounded by landscapes of incredible beauty. Among this town's most remarkable sights are the famous "Hanging Houses". The fare of the region is simple, with game, stews and sausages and do not miss perhaps the most famous product of all, the Manchego cheese.
