These islands are an archipelago in the western Mediterranean, near the coast of Spain, the four chief islands being Ibiza, Formentera, Mallorca and Menorca.Their excellent climate with some 300 days of sun per year, wonderful beaches, a rich culture and the unusual hospitality of their inhabitants make the Balearic Islands one of the preferred holiday destinations in Spain. They each have their own distinct character, and as a whole are different to mainland Spain. The official languages used are both Catalan and Spanish. The largest island, Mallorca is home to the capital of the region, Palma de Mallorca, where the pretty port with its yachts and palm trees creates a magical scene. Also of note is the Cathedral with its interior designed by Gaudi.
