Murcia is characterized by its history of commerce and agriculture and is a major producer of fruits, vegetables, and flowers for Spain and the rest of Europe. It is a very warm and arid region, over the centuries relying a great deal on extensive irrigation supplied by the river Segura. The major tourist interest is of course the Mediterranean coast, Costa Calida ("the warm coast"), with beaches of fine sand, and the unique natural feature of the salt-water lagoon Mar Menor is ideal as a base for varied water sports. The capital city is Murcia , located inland, and on the coast, Cartagena is an important port and of great historical importance being both a Carthaginian and Roman colony. The area is known for its stews, salads, roasted meats, rice and seafood and it has excellent wineries.
